This brief collection of primarily poetry, with a short story included, requires a certain sort of partnership from the reader to achieve its goals. In that sense its doing just what it says on the cover, since accomplicity is the act or state of being an accomplice, but all the author-reader teamwork in the world wouldnt be any good if the work were terrible.

Luckily Lopez turned out some strong work, particularly the short story but also with the poems. Often poetry works on the sense level, with the specific words merely being placed to create an overall mood, but Accomplicity works on the sentence level as well, with some good lines and the clear impression that each visual image has been carefully placed.Careful readers will also notice some allusions to other authors.

Im thinking primarily of the homage to Nabokovs famous Lolita opening in the title story - Amber embers imbibe the timber which somberly turns gray and umber. is both a good sentence and a good ending. Elsewhere the poems deal with a variety of subjects, from personal relationships, as in the two halves of Shelbys Love Story or the opening Winter Blanket, to more abstract concerns, like in Sidewalk Thoughts.

The ending to Poison Switch brings both surprise and a smile, and the strong presence of absence in Reconcile is well-done. Overall Lopezs ear for rhythm and phrasing is strong, and while not all of the entries are winners - Im thinking of the oddly banal Single Line Poems (1-3), which is just what it says - the cumulative effect is both assured and embracing, exactly what youd want out of an accomplice.
